Space, expanding

Im Zentrum dieses KONTRAKLANG-Abends steht das 1985 entstandene Werk La perfezione di uno spirito sottile von Salvatore Sciarrino. Als »musikalisches Ritual« konzipiert, das idealerweise im Freien aufgeführt werden sollte, teleportiert die Gruppe um die Künstlerin Uta Neumann das Stück in die Lausitz. Auf eines der größten Braunkohletagebaugebiete Deutschlands fiel die Wahl vor allem deshalb, weil dort die Rolle des Menschen als geomorphologischer Akteur in der Naturlandschaft großflächig sichtbar wird. In der Inszenierung erscheint die düstere und bergige Mondlandschaft der Lausitz anhand subtiler visueller Objekte, die der Klangkünstler Adam Asnan akustisch zum Leben erweckt. Inmitten der Szenerie stehen sich die Flötistin Rebecca Lane und die Sopranistin Olivia Stahn wie außerweltliche Wesen gegenüber. Die Perkussonistin Vanessa Porter komplettiert das Trio mit einem Glockenspiel, das die spärliche Klanglandschaft von Wind-, Pfeif-, Knurr- und Kreischgeräuschen um einen gespenstischen Wolkenbruch erfüllt, bis schließelich alles vom Wind davon getragen wird.

In der zweiten Hälfte des Abends kann das erste Streichquartett (2009) von Catherine Lamb mit seinem meditativen Kreisen um wenige Grundmotive als Nachhall der existenziellen Fragen der perfezione gehört werden. Die Musik der amerikanischen Komponistin würde man wohl nicht zuallererst als »szenisch« beschreiben, der strikte Minimalismus scheint allzu körperliche Assoziationen geradezu zu verneinen. Trotzdem entfalten die subtilen Schwingungen der rein gestimmten Streichinstrumente einen ganz eigenen Raum, der sich – gleich einer Atembewegung pulsierend – zunehmend auszudehnen scheint. Neben der Komponistin selbst an der Viola sind Sara Cubarsi und Sarah Saviet an den Violinen sowie Judith Hamann am Cello zu hören.

At the center of this KONTRAKLANG evening is the 1985 work La perfezione di uno spirito sottile by Salvatore Sciarrino. Conceived as a »musical ritual« that should ideally be performed outdoors, the group around artist Uta Neumann teleports the piece to the region of Lusatia. As one of the largest open-cast lignite mining areas in Germany, it was chosen primarily because of the role of man as a geomorphological actor in the natural landscape becomes visible on a large scale there. In the staging, the gloomy and mountainous lunar landscape of Lusatia appears by means of subtle visual objects, which are acoustically brought to life by sound artist Adam Asnan. Amidst the scenery, flutist Rebecca Lane and soprano Olivia Stahn face each other like otherwordly beings. Percussionist Vanessa Porter completes the trio with a glockenspiel that fills the sparse soundscape of wind, whistling, growling and screeching noises with a ghostly cloudburst until finally everything is carried away by the wind.

In the second half of the evening, Catherine Lamb‘s first String Quartet (2009), with its meditative circling around a few basic motifs, can be heard as an echo of the existential questions of la perfezione. The music of the American composer would probably not be described first and foremost as »scenic«; the strict minimalism seems to virtually deny all too physical associations. Nevertheless, the subtle vibrations of string instruments tuned in just intonation unfold a space all of their own, which – pulsating like a breathing movement – seems to expand increasingly. In addition to the composer herself on the viola, Sara Cubarsi and Sarah Saviet can be heard on the violins as well as Judith Hamann on the cello.
